Software Freedom: Pragmatic Idealism?

Thu, Oct 12th 2006: Melbourne, Australia: AUUG Annual Conference

The Free / Open Source Software (FOSS) community is incredibly diverse with a corresponding variety of reasons for participation. At one end of the scale is dreamy idealism, which aims to free all information for the good of mankind. At the other end is economic pragmatism, which sees Open Source as a powerful business opportunity and software development model.

This talk discusses how both ends of the spectrum meet in the middle on common ground, and that Free Software really can be Pragmatic Idealism. In particular it focuses on what we are doing wrong (or at least could do better) as a country in terms of building a sustainable local ICT industry by leveraging the innovation made possible by an IT-savvy population.
