Web developers have been severely limited by the "click-wait-read" page-based model of the web, preventing them delivering a high level of interactivity through a browser interface and making the difference between local software and web pages very stark.
But by breaking away from the traditional page-based model some newer web applications such as Gmail and Google Maps behave almost like they are installed and running on the user’s computer. No longer is it necessary to load a whole new page just to update part of the interface or respond to a click.
